Hi! My name is Harshal Agrawal and I'm a senior at Dr. Ronald E. McNair Academic High School in Jersey City, New Jersey. For the past five years, I have been trying to develop a cost-efficient, eco-friendly, and easy to implement method for preventing Harmful Algae Blooms (HABs) using Stropharia Mycelium, or the root structure of the Stropharia Mushroom.
It all started back in 8th grade, when I discovered that Stropharia Mycelium could remove Nitrate and Phosphate (leading causes of HABs) from running water using elementary testing methods. Later that summer, a beloved, local nature reservoir fell victim to a devastating HAB and ever since, I have been expanding my research with hopes of one day implementing it on farms nationwide. With supporting data from my four years of lab testing, I recently lobbied county freeholders and got approval to implement my research at a local HAB-stricken pond for field testing - stay tuned for more updates. |
